India Walton Biography
India Walton is a registered nurse, community organizer, and progressive political leader from Buffalo, New York, known for her advocacy for affordable housing, healthcare access, workers’ rights, and social justice. Raised on Buffalo’s East Side in a working-class family, Walton became a mother at 14 and overcame significant personal challenges to earn her GED and pursue a career in nursing. Her experiences shaped her commitment to addressing the systemic inequalities affecting working-class families and underserved communities.
After working at Buffalo Children’s Hospital and as a school nurse, Walton became active in labor organizing and grassroots advocacy. She helped establish the Fruit Belt Community Land Trust, which works to preserve affordable housing and protect longtime residents from displacement. Her activism has focused on criminal justice reform, economic equity, healthcare access, and community empowerment.
In 2021, Walton made national headlines by defeating four-term incumbent Byron Brown in the Democratic primary for mayor of Buffalo. Her victory energized progressive activists nationwide, although Brown subsequently won the general election through a write-in campaign. Walton later continued her political and advocacy work, including a 2023 campaign for Buffalo Common Council and service as a senior adviser to RootsAction.
In February 2026, Walton was selected as the running mate of New York Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado in his campaign for governor, positioning her as a potential candidate for lieutenant governor. The campaign was suspended later that month when Delgado ended his gubernatorial bid. Walton remains an influential voice in progressive politics, bringing the perspective of a frontline healthcare worker, labor advocate, and community organizer to her work on economic fairness, housing justice, and greater political participation.
