Hector Cantú Biography
Hector Cantú is an American writer, editor, and comic strip creator recognized for his contributions to Latino representation in mainstream media and the comic arts. Cantú studied journalism at the University of Texas at Austin and worked as a reporter and editor at San Antonio Light, Dallas Times Herald, and The Dallas Morning News. He later served as managing editor of Hispanic Business magazine. Cantú began his cartooning career at age 12, drawing inspiration from Mad magazine cartoonists Sergio Aragonés and Antonio Prohías.
Cantú partnered with artist Carlos Castellanos to create the comic strip "Baldo," which centers on a Latino-American teenager, Baldomero Bermudez, his younger sister Gracie, their father Sergio, and their aunt Tia Carmen. "Baldo" is the first nationally syndicated comic strip to focus on a Latino family, exploring themes of cultural identity, bilingualism, and family life. The strip appears in more than 400 newspapers across the United States, including The Dallas Morning News, The Washington Post, and New York Daily News.
Cantú is co-author of "The Lower You Ride, the Cooler You Are: A Baldo Collection" and "Night of the Bilingual Telemarketers: A Baldo Collection." His work is also featured in Frederick Luis Aldama's book "Your Brain on Latino Comics." In addition to print, Cantú serves as co-executive producer of the "Baldo" animated TV show, available on the A+ app. He has written, directed, and produced a comedy web series and is a former board member of Cara Mia Theatre in Dallas.
Cantú's writing has appeared in Los Angeles Times Magazine, The Hollywood Reporter, and D Magazine. He has been a guest on PBS's NewsHour and NPR's All Things Considered. Cantú has delivered presentations at universities including the University of Notre Dame, Ohio State, Purdue, the University of Texas at Austin, Rutgers, and Baylor University, and has taught a graphic novel workshop at the University of Texas at Dallas. He is the founding chair of Texas Cartoonists, a regional chapter of the National Cartoonists Society. The Dallas County Commissioners Court recognized Cantú for co-creating the nationally syndicated comic strip "Baldo," underscoring his influence on American comics and Latino storytelling.
