Gabe Kaplan Biography
Gabe Kaplan is an American comedian, actor, writer, and professional poker player known for his work in entertainment and high-stakes poker. Kaplan's stand-up comedy often featured stories about the characters he encountered during his high school years, leading to national tours and appearances on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson." He recorded the comedy album "Holes and Mello-Rolls," which included routines about his upbringing and other topics.
Kaplan played a central role in the creation and development of the sitcom "Welcome Back, Kotter," collaborating with Eric Cohen and Alan Sacks. The show, inspired in part by his comedy act, featured Kaplan as Gabe Kotter, a former remedial student who returns to teach at his Brooklyn high school. The series, which starred John Travolta, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, Robert Hegyes, and Ron Palillo as the Sweathogs, became a ratings success and cultural touchstone. "Welcome Back, Kotter" received multiple Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series.
Following the sitcom, Kaplan continued performing stand-up and appeared in films such as "Fast Break." He portrayed Groucho Marx in the play Groucho, with a filmed version airing on HBO, and starred in the sitcom "Lewis & Clark." During this period, Kaplan also became active in financial markets and poker, making his first appearance at the World Series of Poker.
Kaplan achieved notable success in professional poker, competing in the World Series of Poker and World Poker Tour, with live tournament winnings approaching $2 million. He finished second in a World Series of Poker Limit Hold 'Em event and won on NBC's "Poker After Dark" in the episode "Queens and Kings."
Kaplan later served as a commentator for "High Stakes Poker" on Game Show Network, spending multiple seasons with the series and becoming a prominent voice in televised poker. His career bridges television and poker, reflecting a longstanding presence in both industries.
