Eric Berlow Biography
Dr. Eric L. Berlow is a data ecologist whose career spans ecology, complexity science, and data innovation. Berlow holds a Bachelor of Arts in biology from Brown University and a doctorate in ecology from Oregon State University. His research on ecological complexity has appeared in Nature, Science, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and has ranked among the most highly cited in the field.
Before entering the private sector, Berlow served as the founding director of the University of California's first science and education institute within Yosemite National Park. There, he worked with park scientists, the U.S. Geological Survey, and Microsoft Research to synthesize satellite, climate, and field data supporting conservation policy and natural resource management, including efforts to protect threatened amphibians. Berlow has collaborated with ecologists, physicists, and computer scientists to analyze the architecture and dynamics of complex networks, including food webs, financial flows, and social connections.
Berlow co-founded and served as CEO of Vibrant Data, a data science company that developed machine learning tools for visualizing high-dimensional data. Following the company's acquisition by Rakuten, Berlow led product innovation for data insights derived from global e-commerce activity. He is CEO of Vibrant Data Labs, a social impact data science organization that creates open-source tools to enhance the effectiveness of funding for climate change solutions. Partners and collaborators have included The Omidyar Group, Omidyar Network, Cisco Foundation, OneEarth, ClimateWorks Foundation, Hopper-Dean Foundation, and TED.
Berlow is known for TED talks on simplifying complexity and uncovering patterns in large datasets. In collaboration with physicist Sean Gourley, he applied algorithms to the TEDx Talks archive, illustrating global connections among ideas. Their presentation was recognized among the top data visualization talks on TED.com. In keynote addresses, Berlow discusses the complexity of the data and artificial intelligence supply chain and strategies for organizations to strengthen their data ecosystems, drawing on decades of experience as a complexity scientist and data entrepreneur.
