Emily Harrington Biography
Emily Harrington is a professional climber recognized for her achievements in competition climbing, high-altitude mountaineering, and big wall free climbing. Harrington began her career as a member of the USA Climbing Team, earning five US National Sport Climbing Championships and two North American Championships. She also secured second place at the IFSC World Championships and has completed a sport climbing redpoint graded 5.14b.
After transitioning from competition, Harrington established several first female ascents of 5.14 sport routes and summited Everest. Her expeditions have included big wall free climbs and high-altitude peaks in Nepal, China, Myanmar, Crimea, and Morocco. Harrington also set a speed record for climbing and skiing the 26,864-foot Cho Oyu, located on the border of Tibet and Nepal.
A significant milestone in Harrington's climbing career was becoming the fourth woman to free-climb El Capitan in a day and the first to do so on the "Golden Gate" route. She completed the climb in 21 hours, 13 minutes, and 51 seconds after three previous attempts. During preparation, Harrington survived a near-fatal fall, an experience that has been widely discussed in the climbing community. She later became the first person to free climb The American Way route solo.
Harrington's ascent of El Capitan is featured in the documentary "Girl Climber," directed by Jon Glassberg and available on Netflix. She has discussed her experiences on TODAY and has been featured in National Geographic's Adventure blog, Rock & Ice Magazine, Outside Magazine, and The Joe Rogan Experience podcast.
Harrington has contributed to the climbing community by speaking at high schools on behalf of Protect Our Winters, teaching climbing skills to Nepali Sherpa at the Khumbu Climber Center, and serving as an ambassador for the Access Fund and American Alpine Club. Her career continues to influence the fields of outdoor adventure, mountaineering, and rock climbing, with a focus on encouraging greater representation of women in big wall free climbing.
