Hugh Herr is recognized for his contributions at the intersection of human biology and technology, particularly in the field of biomechatronics. TIME Magazine named him the "Leader of the Bionic Age" for his work integrating human physiology with electromechanics. As professor of media arts and sciences at the MIT Media Lab and co-director of the K. Lisa Yang Center for Bionics, Herr develops systems that emulate human biomechanics, advancing mobility solutions for individuals with paralysis and limb loss. He is the author and co-author of more than 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts and patents, documenting the science and technology behind his innovations in prosthetics and bionics.
After losing both legs below the knee in a climbing accident, Herr dedicated his career to developing advanced prosthetic technologies. He returned to climbing using specialized prostheses he designed, becoming the first person with a major amputation to compete at a high level in the sport. Herr's early work in fabricating his own prosthetic legs, optimized for climbing, laid the foundation for his scientific career in biomechatronics and rehabilitation engineering.
Herr earned an MS in mechanical engineering at MIT and a PhD in biophysics at Harvard University. He conducted postdoctoral research at the MIT Leg Lab, focusing on legged locomotion and dynamic legged robots, and later became director of the lab, which evolved into the Biomechatronics Group within the Media Lab. His inventions include active leg exoskeletons, powered ankle-foot prostheses, neural interfacing technologies, and "EmPower," an ankle-foot prosthesis recognized by TIME Magazine in the Health category. Herr also led the development of the agonist-antagonist myoneural interface (AMI) amputation technique, which surgically reconnects natural muscle pairs to restore proprioceptive feedback and enable users to control bionic prostheses through neural signals.
Herr has received several awards for his work, including the Heinz Award for Technology, the Economy and Employment; the Prince Salman Award for Disability Research; the Smithsonian American Ingenuity Award in Technology; the Innovator of the Year Award; the Inventor of the Year Award; and the Princess of Asturias Award for Technical & Scientific Research. He also developed a bionic leg for Boston Marathon bombing survivor Adrianne Haslet-Davis, who performed on stage at the TED Conference. Herr has delivered invited lectures at international conferences and colloquia, including the World Economic Forum, Google Zeitgeist, and TEDMED Conference.
Herr's story has been featured in the National Geographic film "Ascent: The Story of Hugh Herr," the Nova PBS documentary "Augmented," and in episodes and articles in CNN, The Economist, Discover, and Nature.
