Dr. Gregory Stock Biography
Dr. Gregory Stock is a biophysicist, biotech entrepreneur, bioethicist, and author recognized for his expertise in the impacts of genomics and advanced technologies in the life sciences. Stock earned degrees from Johns Hopkins University and Harvard Business School, where he was a Baker Scholar and received the Freund-Porter Entrepreneurship Award. His career bridges scientific research with ethical and policy considerations, focusing on biotechnology and its implications for society.
Stock founded the Program on Medicine, Technology and Society at the UCLA School of Medicine and served as its director for 10 years, leading efforts to examine technologies shaping the future of medical science. Through the program, he organized a conference at UCLA on "Engineering the Human Germline," featuring a panel with James Watson, French Anderson, Lee Hood, and other leaders in the life sciences, which initiated a global discussion on human genetic engineering. Stock later became the founding co-director of the Harris Center for Precision Wellness and a research professor in the Department of Genetics and Genomic Sciences at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
Stock is the author of eight books, including "Redesigning Humans," which received the Kistler Science Book Prize, and "The Book of Questions," the first in a series on ethics and values that has sold 5 million copies and been translated into 25 languages. He also edited "Engineering the Human Germline: An Exploration of the Science and Ethics of Altering the Genes We Pass to Our Children." His early work, "Metaman: The Merging of Humans and Machines into a Global Superorganism," explores the convergence of technology and human evolution.
Stock started and led two biotechnology companies, Signum Biosciences and Ecoeos. He also founded Socratic Sciences to produce Fathm, a question-driven communications platform designed to foster understanding and social connection. Stock serves on the editorial boards of American Journal of Bioethics, The Journal of Evolution and Technology, and Rejuvenation Research, and has submitted advisory memos to the president on emerging challenges in biotechnology.
Stock has made more than 1,000 media appearances, including on Nova, PBS, NPR, Larry King, and Oprah. He has participated in policy debates with Ray Kurzweil, Jeremy Rifkin, Daniel Callahan, and Francis Fukuyama on genetics and emerging technology.
