Darrell Duffie Biography
Darrell Duffie is the Adams Distinguished Professor of Management and Professor of Finance at Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he also holds a courtesy appointment in the Department of Economics. Duffie’s research encompasses over-the-counter markets, banking, financial stability, credit risk, valuation and hedging of derivative securities, financial market infrastructure, the term structure of interest rates, financial innovation, security design, and market design. He has been a member of the finance faculty at Stanford for several decades.
Duffie has authored numerous research articles and several books, including "Dynamic Asset Pricing Theory," "Futures Markets," and, with Kenneth Singleton, "Credit Risk." Additional works include "How Big Banks Fail," "Measuring Corporate Default Risk," "Dark Markets," "Fragmenting Markets: Post-Crisis Bank Regulations and Financial Market Liquidity," and "The Handbook of China's Financial System."
Duffie’s expertise has contributed to global financial policy. He reviewed Wall Street Journal analyses concerning bank reporting of borrowing costs related to LIBOR and later chaired a Financial Stability Board effort to explore alternatives to that rate. The U.S. replacement rate for LIBOR was developed by Duffie and a team of experts in their report for the Financial Stability Board. He is also a co-author of the proposal for the Across-the-Curve Credit Spread Index and its extension, the Financial Conditions Credit Spread Index, which are benchmark credit spreads used alongside the Secured Overnight Financing Rate to form a credit-sensitive interest rate benchmark.
Duffie’s recognition in the field of financial economics includes the Stephen A. Ross Prize in Financial Economics, the Amundi Pioneer Prize, the IAFE/SunGard Financial Engineer of the Year, and the NYSE Prize for Equity Research by the Western Finance Association. He is a Fellow of the Econometric Society, a Research Fellow of the National Bureau of Economic Research, a Fellow of the American Finance Association, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Duffie served as president of the American Finance Association and received the FEBS Distinguished Scholar Award for contributions to finance research.
Duffie’s research also addresses the future of money and digital finance, with a focus on banking, financial market infrastructure, and fintech payments. He examines the impact of digital currency, both privately developed and government-issued, on the financial system. Duffie serves as a project advisor for the G30 Working Group on Digital Currencies and is a member of the Systemic Risk Council. He has authored commentaries and policy papers, testified before Congress and regulatory agencies, and written books that analyze financial markets and systemic risk.
