Daniel Czitrom Biography
Daniel Czitrom is Professor of History at Mount Holyoke College. He was born and raised in the Bronx, NY, and he earned his PhD. in History at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. His latest book is New York Exposed: The Gilded Age Police Scandal That Launched the Progressive Era (Oxford , 2016). He is also the author (with Bonnie Yochelson) of Rediscovering Jacob Riis (New Press, 2008; Chicago pb, 2014), and Media and the American Mind: From Morse to McLuhan (North Carolina, 1982, and translated into Spanish and Chinese.) And he is co-author of Out of Many: A History of the American People (Pearson, 8th ed., 2015).
He is co-author, with Jack Gilhooley, of two historical dramas. Red Bessie, a play with songs, based on experiences of American volunteers in the Spanish Civil War, was produced at the Caves Theater, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Edinburgh, Scotland, August 1-25, 2003. Triangle, dramatizing people and events surrounding the disastrous Triangle Shirtwaist fire of 1911, was produced at 59 E. 59 Theaters, New York, April 14-May 1, 2011.
Czitrom has appeared as a featured on-camera commentator for numerous documentary film projects, including The Rise and Fall of Penn Station (PBS, 2013) and New York: A Documentary Film (PBS, 1999.) He served as the historical adviser for Copper (2011-13), the BBC America dramatic series set in Civil War era New York. In 2012 Czitrom was elected to the Society of American Historians, based at Columbia University, which promotes literary distinction in historical writing.
