Dr. Roberts will discuss the origins of various labor systems in the United States (African chattel slavery wasn't the only system!), the evolution of Black slavery, and the realities and complexities of emancipation in North America
In this presentation, Alaina E. Roberts will discuss the history of Black slave-ownership among the Five Tribes (the Chickasaw, Choctaw, Cherokee, Creek, and Seminole Nations) and the Reconstruction project the United States enforced in Indian Territory (Oklahoma), which ended with the Black people in this region becoming the only group of former slaves in the world to receive reparations in the form of land.
She will then leave her listeners with a set of questions that encourages them to come to terms with this history and the anti-Black racism that endures in Indian Country and across North America.
This talk uses an example of a moment from the past when people from different races and backgrounds could have come together in harmony to encourage strength in diversity in our present.
Did you know that Native Americans were the first settlers in many parts of the West? What about the fact that at least 25% of cowboys were Black men? Learn about the real history of the American West!
Did you know Native Americans across North America fought in the Civil War? Learn how Native people fought for the Confederacy and for the Union, and why their reasons for doing so were both similar and distinctly different from those of white and Black Americans.
Alaina E. Roberts was an excellent speaker who provided very thought provoking content.
