Dana Carvey Biography
Dana Carvey is recognized for his work as a comedian, impressionist, and actor in American entertainment. While attending San Francisco State University, Carvey won the San Francisco Stand-Up Comedy Competition, which helped launch his career in stand-up comedy and led to early roles in movies and television, including appearances in the horror film "Halloween II" and the comedy "This Is Spinal Tap." Carvey's dedication to the comedy club circuit eventually led to his role on NBC's "Saturday Night Live."
Carvey joined the cast of "Saturday Night Live" and contributed to the show's resurgence alongside Phil Hartman, Kevin Nealon, Jan Hooks, and Victoria Jackson. He is credited with originating several of the show's memorable characters, including the Church Lady and Garth, and is known for his wide range of impressions of political and pop culture figures such as George H.W. Bush, Ross Perot, Johnny Carson, and Jimmy Stewart. Carvey's seven seasons on "Saturday Night Live" earned him five consecutive Primetime Emmy Award nominations, with one win.
Carvey's character Garth, a reserved rock fan, became widely recognized through the films "Wayne's World" and "Wayne's World 2," produced by SNL creator Lorne Michaels. The "Wayne's World" franchise achieved significant commercial success. Carvey's film and television credits also include "The Secret Life of Pets," "The Master of Disguise," and the Netflix special "Straight White Male, 60." He reprised several of his "Saturday Night Live" characters on the ABC variety program "The Dana Carvey Show."
Carvey experienced a period of reduced public appearances due to heart problems, undergoing multiple surgeries and a double bypass procedure. A surgical error led to further medical intervention and a legal settlement. Carvey returned to performing following his recovery and continued to contribute to the comedy industry.
Carvey has appeared on "Saturday Night Live" portraying figures such as Joe Biden and Elon Musk. He co-hosts the "Fly on the Wall" podcast with David Spade, where they interview former "Saturday Night Live" cast members and hosts. Carvey and Spade also launched the video podcast "Superfly." Carvey continues to perform stand-up comedy across the United States. With a career spanning four decades, Carvey maintains a presence in sketch comedy, stand-up, and entertainment media.
