Christine Sinclair Biography
Christine Sinclair is recognized as one of the top goal scorers in the history of international soccer. An Olympic gold medalist, two-time Olympic bronze medalist, CONCACAF champion, and 14-time recipient of the Canada Soccer Player of the Year award, Sinclair holds the record for the most international goals scored in soccer, with 190 goals, and is among the most-capped international soccer players with 331 appearances. Her goal tally surpasses those of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Pelé, Abby Wambach, and Mia Hamm.
Sinclair's soccer career began at the collegiate level with the University of Portland, where she played for the Portland Pilots. In her first season, she scored 23 goals in 24 games, becoming the top-scoring freshman in the country. Throughout her university career, she consistently scored more than 20 goals each season, earned multiple All-American and Player of the Year honors, and led the Pilots to two NCAA national championships. Sinclair made her international debut with the senior national team at the Algarve Cup in Portugal, where she scored three goals. At the inaugural FIFA U-19 Women's World Championship, she scored a record 10 goals, earning both the Golden Boot and the Golden Ball as the tournament's most valuable player.
On the international stage, Sinclair played in six Women's World Cups and four Olympic Games, earning an Olympic gold medal and two bronze medals. In 2012, she captained Canada to an Olympic bronze medal, scoring a hat trick in a 4-3 semifinal match against the United States, a game that drew significant national attention. Sinclair is one of only four players to score at five World Cup editions, alongside Marta, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Lionel Messi.
At the club level, Sinclair played for the Portland Thorns in the National Women's Soccer League. She captained the Thorns since the league's inaugural season, leading the club to three league titles and two NWSL Shields. Sinclair is the only player to have been part of every Thorns championship team. Her 64 regular-season goals are the most in Thorns history and rank third all-time in the NWSL.
Sinclair's achievements off the field include being the first soccer player to win the Lou Marsh Trophy (now the Northern Star Award), induction into Canada's Walk of Fame and the Order of British Columbia, and recognition as an Officer of the Order of Canada. She also received the FIFA Special Award for Outstanding Career Achievement and was inducted into the Canada Soccer Hall of Fame. Sinclair's career in professional soccer spanned 25 years, two countries, multiple leagues, and six organizations, leaving a lasting impact on Canadian soccer and inspiring future generations of athletes.
