Chris Fischer leads with a simple principle: do good for the world and include the world in the work. A full-time explorer and serial entrepreneur, he has a rare ability to see the big picture, design practical solutions around it, and communicate those solutions broadly. Since founding OCEARCH in 2007, Chris Fischer has led 48 global expeditions focused on returning our world’s oceans to balance and abundance by continuing to unlock the life-history puzzles of white sharks in the 9 global white shark populations.
Chris Fischer built OCEARCH around a collaborative model that brings expert fishermen, multidisciplinary scientists, and institutions together to collect high-quality biological data in the field. That approach enables teams to gather migration, reproductive, genetic, dietary, contaminant, fecundity and parasite data from large sharks in short, focused sampling windows, dramatically shrinking a longstanding data gap for large marine animals and informing conservation policy. To date his team has engaged more than 190 researchers, safely tagged 450+ animals worldwide, and contributed to 100+ peer-reviewed papers (25 with Chris Fischer as co-author).
Committed to open science and public engagement, Fischer launched the OCEARCH Global Shark Tracker in 2013; it now reaches more than 3 million annual users and supports a STEM curriculum of 100+ lesson plans available at ocearch.org. His media work began as host of Offshore Adventures (four-time Emmy winner) and continued with National Geographic and History Channel episodes chronicling white shark research.
Fischer’s work has earned major recognition—including The Explorers Club Lowell Thomas Medal for Imagination in Exploration—and wide media coverage across outlets such as The New York Times, CNN, 60 Minutes, The Wall Street Journal, and more.
