Tundi Agardy Biography
Dr. Tundi Spring Agardy is a marine conservationist recognized for her expertise in connecting marine science, conservation, and policy. She is the founder of Sound Seas, a Washington, D.C.-based organization specializing in the intersection of marine science and policy to safeguard ocean life. Sound Seas develops initiatives to promote effective marine conservation by working at the interface of public policy and community-based conservation at the local level.
Agardy earned a master's degree in marine affairs and a doctorate in biological sciences from the University of Rhode Island, and completed undergraduate studies at Wellesley and Dartmouth Colleges. She completed postdoctoral work at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, where she served as a Marine Policy Fellow and collaborated with multilateral institutions including the Man and Biosphere Reserve Programme of UNESCO and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.
Throughout her career, Agardy has held leadership roles at environmental organizations. Before founding Sound Seas, she served as Senior Director for the Global Marine Program at Conservation International and as Senior Scientist for WWF. At Forest Trends, she developed the MARES Program, which focused on identifying marine values and protecting marine ecosystem services through market-based mechanisms. Agardy has field and policy experience in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, North America, and the Pacific.
Agardy has published widely in marine conservation, including the books "Marine Protected Areas and Ocean Conservation," "Ocean Zoning: Making Marine Management More Effective," and "The Routledge Handbook on Ocean Management," which she co-edited. UNEP launched a manual on ecosystem-based management that she authored, designed to guide Regional Seas programs and planners. She also led the coastal portion of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, a global analysis representing the consensus of scientists on the state of the world's ecosystems. Her work has been recognized with the Rosenstiel Award for achievement in oceanography and marine policy from the University of Miami.
Agardy's clients have included the Center for Environmental Cooperation, the American Museum of Natural History, the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, the Italian Ministry of Environment, the World Bank, the MacArthur Foundation, the WorldFish Center, the Ecological Society of America, the California Marine Life Protection Act Task Force, and The Nature Conservancy. She has served as a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at Worcester College, Oxford, for her academic leadership in environmental sustainability and service in guiding marine policy across intergovernmental institutions such as the World Bank and the United Nations Environment Programme. Agardy is a public speaker and keynote presenter at international conferences, contributing to global efforts to protect oceans and coastal ecosystems.
