Carol Marin Biography
Carol Marin is a retired journalist known for her integrity, sharp reporting, and decades-long career in television news and print. Born in Chicago in 1948, she began her journalism career in radio before moving into television, where she became one of the most respected broadcast journalists in the Midwest. Marin worked as an anchor and investigative reporter for WMAQ-TV in Chicago and later for WBBM-TV, building a reputation for tackling difficult stories with fairness and depth. She also contributed regularly to the Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune, as well as PBS’s "Washington Week."
Over her career, Marin received some of journalism’s highest honors, including multiple Emmy Awards, two Peabody Awards, and the prestigious George Polk Award. She became nationally recognized in 1997 when she resigned from WMAQ-TV after the station hired tabloid talk show host Jerry Springer as a commentator, a move Marin felt compromised journalistic standards. Her principled stand only strengthened her reputation as a journalist who prioritized ethics over ratings.
Beyond her reporting, Marin also served as a mentor and educator. She was co-director of the Center for Journalism Integrity and Excellence at DePaul University, where she trained and inspired the next generation of journalists. Marin retired from daily journalism in 2020, closing out a career marked by courage, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to the public trust.
