Brian Selznick Biography
Brian Selznick is an author and illustrator known for his innovative contributions to children's literature and visual storytelling. Selznick's books have been published in more than 35 languages and have received numerous awards. He graduated from Rhode Island School of Art and Design, initially intending to become a set designer for theater. However, his experience designing window displays at a children's bookstore in New York City led him to pursue a career in children's books. During this time, he published his first book and also worked as a theater set designer and professional puppeteer.
Selznick gained recognition with his first novel-length book that he both wrote and illustrated, "The Invention of Hugo Cabret." The book reached the top of The New York Times Best Sellers List and received the Caldecott Medal. "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" blends elements of novels, graphic novels, children's books, flip books, and early cinema set design. The book was adapted by Martin Scorsese into the film "Hugo," which won five Academy Awards.
Before receiving the Caldecott Medal, Selznick earned a Caldecott Honor for "The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins." He has illustrated novels and picture books for other authors, including the Sibert Honor books "When Marian Sang" by Pam Muñoz Ryan and "Walt Whitman: Words for America" by Barbara Kerley. Selznick expanded the novel form with his thematic trilogy, beginning with "The Invention of Hugo Cabret," followed by the New York Times bestseller "Wonderstruck," adapted by filmmaker Todd Haynes with a screenplay by Selznick, and "The Marvels."
Selznick's novel "Kaleidoscope" is a collection of short stories, and "Big Tree," inspired by an idea from Steven Spielberg, was recognized as one of the best children's books by The New York Times. The audiobook for "Big Tree," narrated by Meryl Streep, received a Grammy nomination. Selznick was selected to create new covers for all seven Harry Potter books to mark the 20th anniversary of the series. He also wrote the story for a new version of The Nutcracker at the Joffrey Ballet in Chicago, choreographed by Tony Award-winning choreographer Christopher Wheeldon.
Selznick entered young adult literature with "Run Away With Me," a novel set in Rome that explores the relationship between American teenager Danny and Italian teenager Angelo. The novel is being adapted for film, with Selznick writing the screenplay. Throughout his career, Selznick has bridged literature, visual art, and cinema, consistently exploring new forms of storytelling that engage readers across generations.
