Adam Silvera Biography
Adam Silvera is a New York Times bestselling author known for his young adult fiction that centers on queer characters and explores themes such as identity, grief, and mortality. An American writer, Silvera began his career in the literary world as a barista, bookseller, and reviewer for Shelf Awareness. He worked at Barnes & Noble and Books of Wonder in New York City and attended the Gotham Writers Workshop, experiences that contributed to his development as a novelist.
Silvera made his literary debut with "More Happy Than Not," published by Soho Teen, which appeared on the New York Times bestseller list and was shortlisted for the Lambda Literary Award for Children's and Young Adult Literature. Publisher's Weekly recognized Silvera as a "Flying Start" author, and "More Happy Than Not" was included on the Rainbow Project Book List by the American Library Association. He followed this debut with "History Is All You Left Me" and "They Both Die at the End," the first young adult novel featuring queer Latinx characters to reach No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list. All of Silvera's novels have appeared on the New York Times Best Sellers List.
"They Both Die at the End" experienced renewed popularity through BookTok, the TikTok community focused on books, which helped propel the novel to the top of the bestseller list. Silvera expanded this universe with "The First to Die at the End," published by HarperCollins, a prequel that explores fate and mortality among young adults. The series continued with "The Survivor Wants to Die at the End," with a final installment, "No One Knows Who Dies at the End," following.
In addition to his contemporary novels, Silvera entered the fantasy genre with the "Infinity Cycle" series, beginning with "Infinity Son" and continuing with "Infinity Reaper" and "Infinity Kings." He also co-authored the young adult romantic comedy "What If It's Us" with Becky Albertalli, published by HarperTeen. Silvera's novels have received multiple Goodreads Choice Awards for Best Young Adult Fiction, and "The First to Die at the End" won the British Book Awards Children's Book of the Year.
Silvera's work has been adapted for television, with "They Both Die at the End" developed for Netflix, written by Chris Van Dusen and executive produced by Bad Bunny and Silvera. He was recognized by Queerty as one of fifty heroes marking the anniversary of the first LGBTQ Pride parade for his contributions to equality and acceptance. Silvera is open about his experiences with depression and borderline personality disorder and is vocal about his identity as a gay man, bringing authenticity and representation to young adult literature.
