Bill Stone Biography
Bill Stone is a robotics engineer, inventor, and aerospace and cave explorer recognized for his work in ultra-deep cave exploration, often utilizing autonomous robots. Stone has participated in more than 80 international expeditions and has accumulated over a decade in the exploration field, including 815 days operating from remote underground camps as deep as 1,500 meters beneath the Earth's surface, as well as a year in Antarctica on scientific and engineering missions.
Stone led a four-month National Geographic-sponsored cave expedition to Cueva Cheve, establishing a record for the most remote location reached inside the Earth in a natural cavern. During this expedition, he spent 29 consecutive days underground without sunlight. For the three-month underground journey—the longest active subterranean push duration recorded—Stone assembled a team of 69 cavers from nine countries. The story was featured in National Geographic Magazine and depicted in the documentary "Explorer: The Deepest Cave," which premiered on National Geographic and streamed on Disney+.
Stone's expeditions have marked significant advancements in exploration technology, including the first use of composite ultra-pressure diving systems, underground camps beyond underwater tunnels, and helium breathing mixtures for cave exploration diving, which contributed to the development of technical diving. Additional milestones include the use of electronic closed circuit diving systems, creation of the first 3D digital cave map, saturation cave diving, robotic exploration and mapping of hydrothermal springs, robotic Antarctic exploration of sub-glacial lakes, and autonomous underwater vehicle missions beneath the McMurdo ice shelf. Stone also led the first fully autonomous exploration of an unknown location inside the Earth and established the most remote underground camp and the longest continuous subterranean exploration push.
As CEO of Stone Aerospace, Stone has overseen the development of robotic systems for aerospace exploration, including four generations of sub-ice autonomous underwater vehicles and three generations of cryobots, or ice-penetrating robots. Stone Aerospace received funding from NASA for Project VALKYRIE (Very-Deep Autonomous Laser-Powered Kilowatt-Class Yo-Yoing Robotic Ice Explorer), which produced an autonomous cryobot capable of melting through extensive ice layers. The advanced devices Sunfish, an ultra-maneuverable autonomous underwater exploration vehicle, and Thor, a full-scale nuclear power compatible cryobot, are leading candidates for missions to search for life in the subsurface ocean of Jupiter's moon Europa.
Stone holds 33 issued patents and has authored more than 120 scientific papers. He serves on the board of directors of five corporations. His Texas-based Shackleton Energy Company aims to raise $15 billion, the approximate cost of a North Sea oil production platform complex, to mine ice believed to be trapped on the moon's southern pole at Shackleton Crater and to sell derived products, including propellants and other consumables, on the moon and in low Earth orbit to international consumers.
