Alexandria Villaseñor Biography
Alexandria Villaseñor is an American climate justice activist, author, and nonprofit founder known for her advocacy in the global environmental movement. Villaseñor's involvement in climate activism began after experiencing the effects of wildfire smoke in California, which impacted her asthma and prompted her to research the links between climate change and extreme weather events. Motivated by her experience and inspired by Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, Villaseñor initiated a solo weekly school strike for climate in front of United Nations Headquarters.
Villaseñor became a national and international organizer for Fridays for Future and played a role in the first global youth climate strike, which mobilized youth from more than 100 countries to demand climate action from world leaders. She co-founded the U.S. Youth Climate Strike movement and established Earth Uprising International, a nonprofit organization focused on climate education and youth mobilization to support grassroots environmental change.
Villaseñor co-hosts the FINTECH.TV show "Price of Climate," where she interviews activists, policymakers, and entrepreneurs about climate leadership. She is a contributing author to "All We Can Save," an anthology featuring women climate leaders, and is a child petitioner for the international complaint to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child, "Children vs. Climate Crisis." In this complaint, Villaseñor and other youth activists filed a legal case with the United Nations, addressing countries' responsibilities under the Paris Agreement.
Villaseñor has addressed the Democratic National Convention, the United Nations, and the World Economic Forum. Her work has been featured in The Washington Post, The New York Times, and The New Yorker, and she has contributed op-eds to The Guardian and Teen Vogue. Villaseñor serves on the advisory board for the national climate policy platform Evergreen Action and is a youth spokesperson and advisor for the American Lung Association. She is the youngest Junior Fellow of the World Academy of Arts and Sciences and a GlobalChoices Arctic Angel, advocating for urgent action on the Arctic crisis.
Villaseñor has received the Earth Day Network Youth Leadership Award, the Rachel Carson Environmental Justice Award, the Common Good American Spirit Changemaker Award, and has been included on Politico's list of 100 people influential in climate change policy. Seventeen magazine named her one of its Voices of the Year. Villaseñor studies at Harvard University. Through her writing, organizing, and public speaking, Villaseñor demonstrates the active role of young people in the climate movement.
