Ajay Banga Biography
Ajay Banga is President of the World Bank Group (WBG), beginning his five-year term on June 2, 2023. He is leading efforts to make the Bank faster, more efficient, and more impactful, with a mission to create a world free of poverty on a livable planet. His priorities include job creation, expanding access to electricity and healthcare, modernizing agribusiness, and leveraging private-sector innovation and financing through initiatives like the Private Sector Investment Lab.
Before joining the World Bank, Banga was Vice Chairman at General Atlantic and President and CEO of Mastercard, where he advanced financial inclusion and founded the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth. He has also served as Chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce and held board roles with the American Red Cross, Kraft Foods, and Dow Inc. Banga’s awards include India’s Padma Shri, the Singapore Public Service Star, and the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.
