Warren Moon Biography
Warren Moon is a former professional football player in the National Football League (NFL) and Canadian Football League (CFL), playing a combined 23 seasons of professional football.
Moon began his professional career with the Edmonton Eskimos (now Edmonton Elks) in 1978, after going unselected in the NFL Draft. His success during his six seasons in the CFL led him to the NFL in 1984 with the Oilers. Over his 17 NFL seasons, Moon was named to nine Pro Bowls and made seven playoff appearances. Following ten seasons with the Oilers, he had brief multiple-year stints with the Vikings, Seahawks, and Chiefs before retiring at age 44. He was a 9-time Pro Bowl selection, led the NFL in passing yards twice, and was named the NFL Man of the Year in 1989.
Moon was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2001 and into the NFL Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006, becoming both the first Canadian Football Hall of Fame player, first undrafted quarterback, and first African-American quarterback to be so honored; he was elected in his first year of eligibility.
Following his gridiron career, Moon worked in broadcasting for the Seattle Seahawks and as the president of his own sports marketing company. He is the founder of the Crescent Moon Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing support for educational pursuits that benefit children most in need who have displayed a commitment to their community. Through his foundation, he has provided over 350 college scholarships.
He sits on the Board of Trustees for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
