Vince Gilligan is a screenwriter, director, and producer known for his contributions to television drama, crime series, and science fiction. Gilligan gained recognition in the television industry for writing episodes of the science fiction series "The X-Files." Notable scripts such as "Small Potatoes" led to his roles as executive producer and creative consultant for the series and its spin-off, "The Lone Gunmen." Early in his career, Gilligan received the Virginia Governor's Screenwriting Award for his screenplay "Home Fries," which was later adapted into a film starring Drew Barrymore and Luke Wilson.
Following his work on "The X-Files," Gilligan created "Breaking Bad" for AMC, a drama centered on a science teacher who turns to manufacturing methamphetamine. The series, recognized for its character-driven storytelling and exploration of moral consequences, received critical acclaim and is frequently cited among the greatest television series. Gilligan later co-created "Better Call Saul" with Peter Gould, a spin-off focusing on the lawyer Saul Goodman. Both "Breaking Bad" and "Better Call Saul" were named as TV Programs of the Year multiple times by the American Film Institute. Gilligan is the creator of the Apple TV+ drama series "Pluribus," which features a storyline about astronomers discovering a mysterious signal from outer space that leads to the development of an RNA sequence, resulting in an extraterrestrial virus that causes a shared human consciousness. The nine-episode drama earned recognition at the Creative Arts Emmys for main title theme music, picture editing, production design, and sound mixing.
