Emma Thompson Biography
Dame Emma Thompson DBE is a British actress and screenwriter known for her extensive work in film, television, and theater. Thompson studied English literature at Newnham College, Cambridge, where she became the first female member of the Footlights theatrical troupe. This experience contributed to her development in comedy and writing. She appeared in the West End revival of the musical "Me and My Girl," which marked a significant point in her career, and gained further recognition for her roles in the BBC TV series "Tutti Frutti" and "Fortunes of War," earning the BAFTA TV Award for Best Actress for both series.
Thompson's film career includes a notable performance in the Merchant Ivory period drama "Howards End," for which she received the Academy Award for Best Actress. She was nominated for two Academy Awards in the same year for her roles in "The Remains of the Day" and "In the Name of the Father." Thompson later won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for "Sense and Sensibility," making her one of the few individuals to have received Academy Awards in both acting and writing categories.
In addition to acting, Thompson wrote and starred in the "Nanny McPhee" series, adapting the stories from Christianna Brand's books. She also played recurring roles in the "Harry Potter" film series, including "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban," "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2." Her filmography includes roles in "Cruella," "Good Luck to You, Leo Grande," and "Matilda: The Musical."
Thompson's accolades include two Academy Awards, three BAFTA Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, and a Primetime Emmy Award, as well as nominations for two Grammy Awards. She was made a Dame by Queen Elizabeth II for her contributions to drama. Thompson is recognized for her versatility across genres, from comedy to drama, and her impact on British and international cinema.
Thompson has reprised her role as Dr. Rawlings in the "Bridget Jones" film franchise and appeared in the action thriller "Dead of Winter." She continues to take on diverse roles in film and television, maintaining a prominent presence in the entertainment industry.
