Uğur Şahin Biography
Uğur Şahin, M.D., is a physician and immunologist recognized for his expertise in messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) medicines. As co-founder and CEO of BioNTech, Şahin has played a central role in advancing mRNA-based approaches to cancer immunotherapy and infectious disease prevention. BioNTech, established in Mainz, Germany, by Şahin, Özlem Türeci, and Christoph Huber, initially focused on developing individualized cancer immunotherapies using mRNA technology to activate the immune system against tumors. Prior to BioNTech, Şahin and Türeci co-founded Ganymed Pharmaceuticals, which was acquired by Astellas Pharma for $460 million.
Şahin led "Project Lightspeed," overseeing the development of the first mRNA vaccine for COVID-19. Under his direction, BioNTech, in partnership with Pfizer, developed an mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccine that received emergency or conditional authorization from regulatory authorities in the United Kingdom, United States, and European Union. Şahin and his team also pioneered RNA vaccine nanoparticle delivery strategies targeting tissue-derived dendritic cells and were the first to administer an mRNA encapsulated in a nanoparticle delivery system to humans. The development of the COVID-19 vaccine is chronicled in the book "The Vaccine: Inside the Race to Conquer the COVID-19 Pandemic."
Beyond infectious diseases, Şahin has focused on transforming cancer treatment through the development of neoantigen-specific mRNA cancer vaccines, which are individually tailored and produced on demand. He is co-inventor on more than 500 filed patent applications and patents. Şahin holds a full professorship in Translational Oncology and Immunology at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, where he has supervised more than 50 Ph.D. students, and serves as chairman of the Scientific Management Board of the Helmholtz Institute for Translational Oncology (HI-TRON).
Şahin's scientific contributions have been recognized with honors including the Merit Award of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Werner von Siemens Ring, the German Cancer Award, the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Mustafa Prize, and the Prix Jeantet-Collen for Translational Medicine. He received the Novo Nordisk Prize alongside Katalin Karikó, Drew Weissman, and Özlem Türeci for scientific discoveries leading to the approval of the first COVID-19 mRNA vaccine. Financial Times named Şahin and Türeci People of the Year for their work on the COVID-19 vaccine. Şahin has spoken at global forums, including TED and the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference, discussing the impact of mRNA technology on cancer and infectious disease treatment.
