Christoph Gebald Biography
Dr. Christoph Gebald is the co-founder and co-CEO of Climeworks, a company specializing in high-quality carbon removal and direct air capture (DAC) technology. A mechanical engineer, Gebald holds a master's degree and a Ph.D. from ETH Zurich, where he researched direct air capture technologies and co-founded Climeworks with Jan Wurzbacher. Climeworks originated as a spin-off from ETH Zurich, where Gebald and Wurzbacher developed DAC technology to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Climeworks has evolved from a university laboratory project into a commercial enterprise in the carbon removal industry. The company progressed from capturing milligrams of CO2 in the lab to developing a kilogram-scale prototype and then launching its first modular CO2 collector, which captured tonnes of CO2. Climeworks opened its first commercial facility, Capricorn, in Switzerland, and later expanded to the thousands-of-tonnes scale with the Orca plant in Iceland, recognized as the world's first large-scale carbon dioxide removal plant. Climeworks operates the world's largest direct air capture and storage plant and has secured over $1 billion in funding.
The company's Mammoth project in Iceland is the world's largest direct air capture and storage plant, designed to capture up to 36,000 tons of CO2 annually using renewable geothermal energy from ON Power. Climeworks continues to scale its operations, applying a process Gebald describes as deployment-led innovation, and is developing projects in the United States, each targeting the capture of at least 1 million tons of CO2 per year.
With more than 15 years of experience in direct air capture, Gebald is recognized as an expert in carbon removal technology. Climeworks has received international recognition, including The Helena Prize, and Gebald and Wurzbacher were named to the Time100 list. Gebald has been selected as a Digital Shaper by Swiss newspapers BILANZ and Handelszeitung. He has delivered keynotes and participated in panels at global events such as the World Economic Forum, COP, and Microsoft's CEO Summit, contributing to discussions on climate technology and the scaling of carbon removal solutions.
