Thomas Sanderson Biography

Thomas M. Sanderson is a consultant, and the deputy director and senior fellow in the CSIS Transnational Threats Project. His work focuses on terrorism, long-term global threats and trends, U.S. national security policy, intelligence and information sharing, Central Asia, and China.

Through 12 years of counterterrorism experience he has conducted field work across 50 nations, engaging all manner of sources including terrorists, extremists, insurgents, foreign intelligence officers, nongovernmental organization leaders, and academics. From 2004 to 2009, he led the CSIS open source counterterrorism project, designing and directing two major studies on threats in Europe and Southeast Asia. In the course of this work at CSIS, Sanderson has published ten major reports, as well as articles in The Economist, The New York Times, Washington Post, West Point CTC Sentinel, and Harvard Asia-Pacific Review.

He also serves as a course instructor and consultant for the U.S. government and the private sector. In 2005, he completed a fellowship at the American Academy in Berlin, with research on U.S.-German counterterrorism cooperation and threat perception.

Prior to CSIS, Mr. Sanderson was an analyst with Science Applications International Corporation, where he conducted extensive studies of terrorist groups for the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency. He also held the 2001 Henry L. Stimson Center Fellowship at Fudan University in Shanghai, China, where he researched the Chinese perspective on U.S. Ballistic Missile Defense; he also has four years of NGO development experience focused on Central Asia and Russia.

Sanderson holds a B.A. from Wheaton College in Massachusetts and an M.A. in law and diplomacy from the Fletcher School at Tufts University.
