Ted Ligety Biography
Ted Ligety is recognized as one of the most decorated alpine skiers in American history and a significant figure in the sport of giant slalom. Ligety is known as the first American man to win two Olympic gold medals in alpine skiing, capturing his first in the alpine combined at the Turin Olympic Winter Games and his second in the giant slalom at the Sochi Olympic Winter Games, becoming the first American to win Olympic gold in that event. At age 21, Ligety became the youngest American male to win an Olympic gold medal in alpine skiing.
Throughout his career, Ligety achieved five World Cup titles, placing him among the top giant slalom skiers alongside Ingemar Stenmark and Marcel Hirscher. He earned two Olympic medals, five world championships, three world giant slalom championships, five giant slalom titles, 336 World Cup starts, 25 World Cup victories, and 52 World Cup podiums across five disciplines. In one season, Ligety became the first man in 45 years to win three events at the World Championships and became the first skier to win three consecutive World Championship titles in giant slalom at the World Championships in Colorado.
Ligety's versatility was evident in his success across multiple disciplines, including slalom, giant slalom, alpine combined, super-G, and downhill. He retired from competitive alpine skiing due to severe back pain and two herniated discs, concluding a career that included podium finishes in all major FIS Ski World Cup events.
In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Ligety co-founded Shred Optics with Carlo Salmini, a materials engineer and skier. The company, which sells goggles, sunglasses, and helmets in more than 40 countries, has headquarters in Park City, Utah, and Venice, Italy.
Following his retirement, Ligety has remained active in the winter sports community. He served as an analyst for NBC's coverage of alpine skiing at the Beijing Olympic Winter Games and returned to the network's broadcast team for the Milano Cortina Olympic Winter Games. Ligety continues to contribute to the sport as a content creator, speaker, and ambassador for skiing. His induction into the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame underscores his enduring impact on alpine skiing and winter sports.
