Stromae Biography
Paul Van Haver, known professionally as Stromae, is a Belgian singer, rapper, songwriter, and record producer recognized for his innovative approach to music production and songwriting. Stromae blends rap, pop, afrobeat, and francophone lyrics, drawing on influences such as Jacques Brel, Cuban son, Congolese rhumba, house, hip-hop, and the late-1980s new beat sound from Belgium. His stage name is derived from the word maestro with the syllables reversed, reflecting his creative identity as a singer-songwriter and producer.
Stromae gained international recognition with the hit song "Alors on danse," which reached number one in multiple European countries. Following the success of "Alors on danse," he released the album "Cheese," which topped the Belgian chart and led to a collaboration with Kanye West on a remix of the single. His second album, "Racine carrée," achieved significant commercial success, selling millions of copies worldwide and establishing Stromae as a prominent figure in the francophone and international music scene. The album addresses themes such as social networks, relationships, discrimination, health issues, and family dynamics.
As a vocalist, songwriter, and producer, Stromae has addressed topics including AIDS, cancer, and absent fathers in his music. He has collaborated with artists such as Kanye West and Lorde. The song "Ta fête" served as the official anthem for Belgium's national football team at the World Cup, and Stromae made his U.S. debut with live performances and an appearance on NBC's "Late Night with Seth Meyers." He is noted for integrating music and fashion, often appearing with a clean-cut look and signature bow tie. Stromae has received several awards, including four Victoires de la Musique, four NRJ Awards, an MTV Award, and Best Belgian Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards. He has also performed at venues such as Madison Square Garden in New York.
After experiencing health challenges related to preventive malaria medication, Stromae returned with the album "Multitude," which became his third chart-topping release. He was nominated for an MTV Music Award in the "Video For Good" category for the song "Fils de Joie." Stromae achieved a number one single with "Ma meilleure ennemie," recorded with Pomme for the soundtrack of "Arcane League of Legends: Season 2." His collaborations span genres and generations, including features on Orelsan's "La fête est finie" and Coldplay's "Everyday Life." Stromae is recognized as an inventive and influential figure in contemporary music, known for his contributions to international pop, electronic music, and francophone songwriting.
