Stacey Gordon Biography
Stacey Gordon is a puppeteer and voice actress recognized for her contributions to children's television and autism advocacy. Gordon began her puppeteering career in high school and has developed expertise as a puppet builder, performer, and educator. She has created and performed puppets for organizations and brands including Mayfair Games, Etsy, Phoenix Coyotes, NASA, Hewlett Packard, and Barenaked Ladies. Gordon is the founder of Puppet Pie, an online site and studio dedicated to custom puppet creation and live performances.
Gordon is best known for portraying Julia, a four-year-old autistic Muppet, on the children's television series "Sesame Street." She was selected for the role after being recommended by Leslie Carrara-Rudolph and auditioning for the show's producers. Julia's introduction marked the first appearance of a Muppet with autism on "Sesame Street," drawing international attention to the show's efforts to promote autism awareness and inclusion.
Gordon's connection to the autism community extends beyond her performance. She began working as a habilitation specialist and later became a certified autism specialist. Her personal experience as a parent of a child with autism informs her portrayal of Julia, emphasizing authenticity and respect in representing neurodiversity. Gordon has credited her background in habilitation for shaping Julia's character and voice.
In addition to her work on "Sesame Street," Gordon teaches puppetry to neurodiverse audiences nationwide and leads the Puppetry Program at Gen Con in Indianapolis. She collaborated with Hewlett Packard on The HP Print Pals Project, which focuses on enhancing communication and self-expression through puppetry. Gordon is an alumna of the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center's National Puppetry Conference and serves on the board of directors for Puppeteers of America. She has been recognized by Phoenix New Times as Best Puppeteer for her contributions to both "Sesame Street" and the Phoenix arts community.
As a keynote speaker, Gordon addresses topics such as autism advocacy, early intervention, and the intersection of performance and neurodiversity. Through her work, Gordon continues to advance conversations around inclusion, empathy, and representation in children's media and the performing arts.
