Sophia Smith Biography
Sophia Smith is an American professional soccer player who plays as a forward in the National Women's Soccer League for Portland Thorns FC and is a member of the U.S. Women's National Team. Smith was the first teenage player selected in the NWSL draft, chosen as the first overall pick in the NWSL College Draft.
Before turning professional, Smith played collegiate soccer at Stanford University. During her freshman year, she sustained a significant injury, breaking her ankle and tearing ligaments in her foot, which required surgery and caused her to miss the remainder of the season. She returned the following year to help lead Stanford to an NCAA championship. In her sophomore season, Smith led the team to the College Cup national title and was named Most Outstanding Player of the tournament after scoring a hat trick in the semifinal.
Smith's professional career includes several record-breaking achievements in women's soccer. She has been the leading scorer for both Portland Thorns and the U.S. Women's National Team, and became the youngest player to receive the regular-season Most Valuable Player award in NWSL history. Smith was also named U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year and became the youngest player to lead the national team in scoring in a calendar year since Mia Hamm. She won the NWSL Golden Boot after scoring 11 goals in 17 regular season games. Smith is recognized for her versatility, with veteran player Megan Rapinoe noting her ability to attack in multiple ways and her strong finishing skills.
Smith delivered a series of notable performances at the Olympic Games, scoring three goals for the United States, including a decisive strike in added extra time during a semifinal win over Germany. The United States went on to win the gold medal in the final against Brazil. Smith has been shortlisted for the Women's Ballon d'Or in consecutive years, highlighting her standing in international women's soccer.
Smith is the first player born in the 2000s to play for the U.S. Women's National Team and has taken on a leadership role for a new generation of players. She has spoken about the growth and increased recognition of women's sports, noting the rising attention and investment in the women's game. Smith is known for her explosiveness, acceleration, ball control, and finishing ability, and is effective as both a winger and striker. Her confidence and composure under pressure contribute to her impact both on and off the field.
