Siddharth Kara Biography
Siddharth Kara is a New York Times bestselling author, researcher, and activist recognized for his expertise in human trafficking and modern slavery. Kara has held academic positions at Harvard University, University of California, Berkeley, and University of Nottingham, and served as director of the Program on Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, where he also taught a course on human trafficking.
Kara began his research on human trafficking in a Bosnian refugee camp and has since traveled to more than 30 countries across six continents to document cases of modern slavery. He has personally recorded the experiences of more than 1,300 former and current slaves, witnessing the sale of humans into slavery and engaging directly with traffickers and exploiters.
Kara has published a trilogy on modern slavery: "Sex Trafficking: Inside the Business of Modern Slavery," "Bonded Labor: Tackling the System of Slavery in South Asia," and "Modern Slavery: A Global Perspective." His first book received the Frederick Douglass Book Prize for outstanding nonfiction on slavery and abolition. Kara adapted "Sex Trafficking" into the feature film "Trafficked." "Modern Slavery: A Global Perspective" was launched at the United Nations and received recognition from experts in the field.
His book "Cobalt Red: How the Blood of the Congo Powers Our Lives" became a New York Times bestseller and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in nonfiction. The book investigates the conditions in the Democratic Republic of Congo's cobalt mines, where a significant portion of the world's cobalt—used in lithium-ion batteries for smartphones, laptops, and electric vehicles—is extracted, often by children in hazardous conditions. Drawing on extensive field research in more than 50 countries, Kara examines how modern slavery is embedded in global supply chains.
Kara's work "The Zorg: A Tale of Greed and Murder That Inspired the Abolition of Slavery" has been recognized by New York Times, Time Magazine, and The New Yorker, and was a finalist for the PEN/John Kenneth Galbraith Award for Nonfiction and the Silver Gavel Award from the American Bar Association. The book was also runner-up for the Mark Lynton History Prize awarded by Columbia Journalism School and the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University.
In addition to his writing, Kara advises the United Nations, the U.S. government, and other governments on anti-trafficking policy and law, and has testified before the U.S. Congress and several foreign parliaments. He has appeared in media as an expert on modern slavery, including on the Joe Rogan Experience, Fresh Air with Terry Gross, CNN, Fox News, ABC News, and CNBC. Kara's research includes mapping global human trafficking networks, investigating sex trafficking, examining organized crime groups involved in human organ trafficking, and tracing supply chains affected by slavery and child labor. His work combines investigative research, academic analysis, and storytelling to address human rights, labor exploitation, and global supply chain ethics.
