Sherry Lansing Biography
Sherry Lansing has had an outstanding career in the motion picture business, spanning almost 30 years. She was involved in the production, marketing, and distribution of more than 200 films, including Academy Award winners "Forrest Gump," "Braveheart," and "Titanic." Lansing made history in 1980, becoming the first woman to head a major film studio when she was appointed President of 20th Century Fox. Later, as an independent producer, Lansing was responsible for such successful films as "Fatal Attraction," "The Accused," "School Ties," "Indecent Proposal," and "Black Rain." She returned to the ranks of executives in 1992 when she was named Chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures, a role she held for an extended period spanning over 12 years (1992 – 2005). Since 2023, Lansing has been the chairwoman of Universal Music Group's board of directors.
The Sherry Lansing Foundation (SLF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to cancer research, health, public education, and encore career opportunities, was launched in 2005. The foundation's initiatives include the EnCorps STEM Teachers Program, founded by Lansing to retrain retired and mid-career professionals from the technology sector to serve as math and science teachers in California public schools. In addition to her work with SLF, Lansing served as a Regent of the University of California from 1999 to 2022 and as chairman of the board from 2011 to 2013. She also co-founded the Stand Up To Cancer initiative which funds collaborative, multi-institutional cancer research "Dream Teams."
In December 2004, Lansing was appointed to the Independent Citizens’ Oversight Committee (ICOC) of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. This was established by California’s groundbreaking ballot measure, Proposition 71, which provides $3 billion in funding for embryonic stem cell research. Lansing served as the cancer patient advocate, and also held the positions of Chair of the Governance Committee and Co-Chair of the Scientific and Medical Accountability Standards Working Group.
Lansing has received numerous awards and recognitions for her contributions to the entertainment industry and her philanthropic endeavors, even having an award named after her given at The Hollywood Reporter's Annual Women in Entertainment Gala, the Sherry Lansing Leadership Award. These include the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the 79th Academy Awards in 2007, and the Exemplary Leadership in Management Award from UCLA Anderson School of Management. She was also named one of the 30 most powerful women in the US by Ladies' Home Journal in 2001 and has been listed number one on The Hollywood Reporter's Power 100 list multiple times. Lansing was the first female film studio head to place hand and footprints at the Grauman's Chinese Theater in 2005, and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1996. She was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 2017.
Lansing graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science Degree from Northwestern University in 1966 and has an honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts from the American Film Institute.
