Shane Ortega Biography
Shane Ortega is a seasoned multi-dimensional, multi-disciplinary lighthouse, transformative DEIAB change agent and human rights equity advocate. They are a mixed Native American, Two-spirit, retired U.S. Army Staff Sergeant and former U.S. Marine. Ortega served with distinction as one of the first openly transgender Americans on active duty, including two deployments in the theaters of Iraq and one to Afghanistan. Using personal service as example, they dismantled barriers for those to follow by being one of the first volunteers and trainers for the U.S. Marine Corps “Female Lioness” team. This program trains, integrates and deploys women in direct infantry and special operations combat support roles.
Ortega earned an undergraduate degree in Public Health and Policy, and a Master of Legal Studies in Indigenous Peoples Law. This combined with lived experience has aided them with a deep understanding of complex social issues, and a commitment to equitable and reciprocal justice relationships. They have also utilized storytelling in documentary film such as HBO’s "The Trans List," directed by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, and "Trans in Trumpland," directed Tony Zosherafatain for public education.
While actively serving in 2008, Ortega co-founded Outserve Trans Chapter. This group was the pioneering resource network and advocacy for all branches of the transgender military community. In 2013, Ortega co-founded Sparta, a non-profit organization dedicated to the advocacy of rights for transgender service members. Sparta provides a direct support network to transgender military members during pivotal moments of legislative change.
Ortega, founder and Director of Ultraviolet Events Co. Ltd., is committed to fostering inclusive and equitable environments through innovative Indigenous arts, spiritual wellness support, programming, direct advocacy, and education. Their work has supported organizations in cultivating compassionate, values-driven workplaces that actively embrace and embed diversity and inclusion.
Most recently, Ortega contributed to the local arts community as a cast member in the forthcoming short film "Front Left," directed by Rb E Moran. The project presents a trans reinterpretation of Inanna’s descent into the underworld, structured in seven acts and set within the Berlin club scene.
Ortega's comprehensive commitment to equity is evident in their advocacy work for Native Americans, 2SLGBTQ+ rights, military veterans and other marginalized communities. Their research on transgender military personnel has been instrumental in shaping policy and advancing inclusivity within the armed forces and public at large. As a co-author of the DOD Instruction 1300.28, the Journal of Gay &aLesbian Mental Health article,"Trans in the United States Military: Fighting for Change," and a contributor to Trans and Gender Affirming Care 2020 Strategic Vision and Action Plan for Indian Health Services, they have demonstrated instrumental leadership and a strong capacity to drive change.
Ortega has been recognized with numerous awards both military and civilian, including the Harper's Bazaar Icon Award in 2019. Their passion projects are creating mixed media art and composing fusion healing soundscapes. Ortega’s mix Some Flowers Bloom at Night reached No. 46 in 2023 on the Global Techno Charts.
