Selema Masekela Biography
Selema Masekela, also known as Sal Masekela, is an American television host, sports commentator, actor, singer, and Emmy-nominated producer with a career spanning more than three decades in sports and entertainment media. Masekela has contributed to platforms including VICE, E!, ESPN, ABC, Nat Geo, Red Bull Media House, and NBC. Deeply connected to action sports culture, his interests in surfing, snowboarding, and skateboarding began during his time in Southern California. His career started as an intern at Transworld Publications, publisher of TW Snow, TW Skateboarding, and TW Surf magazines.
Masekela is recognized for his long-standing role as host of the X Games and Winter X Games on ESPN, where he became a prominent figure in action sports broadcasting. After his tenure at ESPN, he worked with NBC and NBC Sports Network in partnership with Red Bull Media House. His broadcasting experience extends to serving as an NBA sideline reporter for ESPN and as a correspondent for ESPN's coverage of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Masekela also hosted and executive produced the VICELAND docu-series, "VICE World of Sports," which explores global cultures and communities through the lens of sports.
In addition to his broadcast work, Masekela is the frontman of the band Alekesam, which shares its name with his first film. The film, which premiered at Tribeca Film Festival, explores his relationship with his father and their connection through music. Alekesam's music has appeared on "Entourage" and "House of Lies." Masekela is also the author of the book "AFRO SURF," which highlights African surfing culture. His podcast, "What Shapes Us?," examines personal stories and cultural identity, reflecting his commitment to cultural storytelling and sports journalism.
Masekela is active in social advocacy as the co-founder of Stoked Mentoring, an organization supporting at-risk youth through action sports. He serves on the advisory boards of The Lunchbox Fund, which provides daily meals to students in Soweto, South Africa, and The Skatepark Project, which funds and builds skateboarding parks for youth. Masekela frequently hosts live events, including YouTube's Brandcast in New York and Paris, YouTube Live on Stage from the Kennedy Center, and Google's Zeitgeist. His work bridges sports journalism, cultural storytelling, music, and philanthropy, establishing him as a versatile presence in contemporary media.
