Samuel Shem Biography
Samuel Shem is the pen name of Stephen Joseph Bergman, an American psychiatrist, novelist, playwright, and activist whose work has influenced the conversation around medical education, humanism, and the ethics of patient care. Bergman was a Rhodes Scholar at Balliol College, Oxford, and graduated from both Harvard College and Harvard Medical School. He completed an internship at Beth Israel Hospital, an experience that inspired his debut novel. Bergman also earned a DPhil in physiology at Oxford and served on the Harvard Medical faculty for decades.
"The House of God" is a satirical novel written under the pen name Samuel Shem. The novel follows a group of medical interns at a fictionalized version of Beth Israel Hospital over the course of a year, focusing on the psychological harm and dehumanization caused by residency training. The New York Times described it as "raunchy, troubling and hilarious." The novel has acquired a cult following and is frequently referenced in discussions of humanism, medical ethics, and physician training. The Lancet named it one of the two most important American medical novels of the 20th century. Publishers Weekly ranked it number two on its compilation of the Best Satires of All Time. The novel has sold more than 3 million copies and has been translated into several languages.
Bergman has published three sequels to "The House of God": "Mount Misery," "Man's 4th Best Hospital," and "Our Hospital." Together, these form "The Healing Quartet," spanning five decades of American medicine. His other novels include "Fine," "In the Heart of the Universe," and "The Spirit of the Place." "The Spirit of the Place" earned two national awards for best literary novel. Beyond fiction, Bergman co-authored with Janet Surrey the Off-Broadway play "Bill W. and Dr. Bob," about the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous, which won the Performing Arts Award of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. The New York Times called it "an insightful new play."
Bergman's work explores the moral challenges of the medical workplace and the connection between values, relationships, and healing. He serves as a professor in medical humanities at NYU School of Medicine and as a visiting artist at the American Academy in Rome. Recognized for contributions to medicine and the humanities, Bergman is a frequent speaker internationally and has delivered more than 60 commencement speeches on the theme of "How to Stay Human in Medicine." His international engagements have included keynote talks at the RCGP Annual Conference and the Royal Society of Medicine. Bergman bridges the fields of literature, psychiatry, and medical ethics, providing insight for audiences ranging from medical students to policymakers.
