Resmaa Menakem Biography
Resmaa Menakem is an author, psychotherapist, and licensed clinical social worker known for his work on racialized trauma and somatic therapy. Menakem specializes in the effects of trauma on the human body and explores the relationship between trauma, white body supremacy, and racism in the United States. He is the originator and advocate of Somatic Abolitionism, an embodied antiracist practice focused on living and culture building. Menakem trained at Peter Levine's Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute and studied with Dr. David Schnarch and Bessel van der Kolk, author of the book "The Body Keeps the Score."
Menakem's career includes extensive community service and clinical work. He has worked as a community care counselor in Afghanistan, supporting soldiers experiencing trauma from violent conflict, and is a certified Military Family Life Consultant. Menakem has served as director of counseling services for Tubman Family Alliance, behavioral health director for African American Family Services in Minneapolis, domestic violence counselor for Wilder Foundation, divorce and family mediator, and social worker for Minneapolis Public Schools. He is a senior fellow at The Meadows Behavioral Healthcare.
Menakem is the author of "My Grandmother's Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies," which appeared on the New York Times bestseller list, and "The Quaking of America: An Embodied Guide to Navigating Our Nation's Upheaval and Racial Reckoning." In "My Grandmother's Hands," Menakem examines the impact of racism in America through the lens of trauma and body-centered psychology, emphasizing the need to heal generational anguish rooted in white supremacy. He has also written "Monsters in Love: Why Your Partner Sometimes Drives You Crazy—And What You Can Do About It" and "The Stories from My Grandmother's Hands," a children's picture book, reflecting his engagement with diverse audiences.
Menakem is the founder of the Cultural Somatics Institute and developed Cultural Somatics, which uses the body and resilience as tools for growth. As the founder of Justice Leadership Solutions, a leadership consulting firm, he provides coaching for leaders navigating civil unrest, organizational change, and community building. He also established The Addieun Foundation in Minneapolis. Menakem collaborated with Sounds True to release the on-demand course "Healing Racialized Trauma: Somatic Abolitionism for Every Body."
Menakem's public engagement includes co-hosting a radio show with Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison on KMOJ-FM in Minneapolis, hosting "Resmaa in the Morning" on KMOJ, and appearing on The Oprah Winfrey Show and Dr. Phil. He has been a guest on Charlamagne Tha God's Comedy Central program "Tha God's Honest Truth," the radio show "The Breakfast Club," and Krista Tippett's "On Being." Menakem's workshops, retreats, and university engagements present his body-centered framework for racial healing to audiences across the country, contributing to ongoing conversations about trauma, race, and community healing.
