Ruby Rose Biography
Ruby Rose is an Australian actress, model, television presenter, and DJ known for her work in film, television, and the music industry. Rose first gained national prominence as a presenter on MTV Australia, later co-hosting television shows such as "Australia's Next Top Model" and "The Project." She credits her self-produced short film "Break Free" for helping launch her acting career, describing how she created short films to study her craft when traditional industry opportunities were limited.
Rose's breakout role came when she was cast as Stella Carlin on seasons three and four of Netflix's "Orange Is the New Black." Her performance in the series contributed to the cast winning a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. Rose was also honored with the GLAAD Stephen F. Kolzak Award for her contributions to promoting equality and acceptance in the LGBTQ+ community. She was named GQ Australia Woman of the Year and received British LGBT Award nominations for Celebrity Rising Star and Celebrity of the Year.
Following her breakthrough, Rose appeared in several major Hollywood action films, including "Resident Evil: The Final Chapter," "XXX: Return of Xander Cage," and "John Wick: Chapter 2," as well as the musical comedy "Pitch Perfect 3" and the monster film "The Meg." Her career expanded further when she was cast as Batwoman on The CW's series Batwoman, making her the first openly lesbian superhero lead in television history. The role marked the first time an openly lesbian actress portrayed an openly lesbian superhero on television.
During production of Batwoman, Rose underwent emergency spinal surgery to treat two herniated discs caused by performing her own stunts. She has stated that her back surgery was a contributing factor in her decision to leave the series. Throughout her career, Rose has been open about her personal challenges, including experiences with bullying and mental health, and has served as an ambassador for Headspace, focusing on youth mental health awareness.
In addition to her on-screen work, Rose is recognized as a DJ, fashion designer, and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and mental health awareness. She was named one of the 25 Most Influential Gay and Lesbian Australians by SameSame magazine.
