Richie Porte Biography
Richie Porte is an Australian professional road cyclist known for his climbing ability and competitive approach. Nicknamed the Tasmanian Devil, Porte began competitive cycling at age 21 after participating in triathlons and competitive swimming. His victory in the individual time trial at the Baby Giro attracted the attention of professional cycling teams, and he secured his first professional win in the time trial stage at the Tour of Romandie. In his first Grand Tour, the Giro d'Italia, Porte won the Best Young Rider award and finished seventh overall, leading the general classification for three days in the Maglia Rosa race leader's jersey.
Porte joined Team Sky, where he won the Volta ao Algarve and contributed as a domestique to three Tour de France victories for the team. He claimed the Australian National Time Trial Championships and won two stages and the overall classification at Paris–Nice, finishing atop the UCI world road cycling rankings. Over a nine-year period, Porte won six major stage races and became the first rider to win Paris–Nice, Volta a Catalunya, and Giro del Trentino in a single season. His achievements include victories at eight World Tour stage races: Paris–Nice, Volta a Catalunya, Tour de Romandie, Tour Down Under, Tour de Suisse, and Critérium du Dauphiné.
Porte's career included overcoming significant setbacks, such as a crash during the Tour de France that resulted in a broken collarbone and pelvis. He later achieved a podium finish at the Tour de France, joining Cadel Evans as one of the only Australians to finish on the podium in the event. In his tenth Tour de France appearance, Porte overcame a two-minute deficit on the penultimate stage to secure third place overall.
Porte received recognition for his accomplishments with the Oppy Medal as Australian Cyclist of the Year and induction into the Australian Cycling Hall of Fame. He also received the Cycling Tasmania International Medal for his contributions to the sport. The Tour Down Under was a particularly successful event for Porte, who won the Willunga Hill stage seven times. He rode for BMC Racing and Trek–Segafredo before concluding his career with Ineos Grenadiers. After a 13-year career in professional cycling, Porte retired and returned to live in Tasmania.
