Ernie Els Biography
Ernie Els is a South African professional golfer known for his achievements in international golf and his influence on the sport. A former World No. 1, Els is nicknamed The Big Easy due to his physical stature and fluid golf swing. He has secured 80 professional victories, including four major championships, one senior major, two World Golf Championships, and a record seven World Match Play titles. His major championship wins include the U.S. Open and The Open Championship. With his second U.S. Open victory, Els became the first international player since Alex Smith to win the tournament twice.
Els has compiled a significant record across multiple tours, with 19 PGA Tour wins and 28 European Tour wins, ranking seventh all-time. He earned the European Tour Order of Merit in consecutive seasons and was named European Tour Golfer of the Year three times. Els also received PGA Tour Rookie of the Year honors. He was elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame on his first ballot and has been recognized with the Payne Stewart Award and the Old Tom Morris Award for his sportsmanship and contributions to golf.
Continuing his competitive presence into the senior stage of his career, Els captured his first senior major championship at the Kaulig Companies Championship at Firestone Country Club. The win elevated him to the top of the Charles Schwab Cup standings. In team competition, Els competed in the Presidents Cup eight times as a member of the International Team, tying for the most appearances by an International Team member. He later served as captain of the International side at Royal Melbourne Golf Club and as playing captain at the World Champions Cup.
Off the course, Els is active in philanthropy and business. Along with his wife Liezl, he founded The Els for Autism Foundation, which established The Els Center of Excellence, a site offering programs and services for individuals with autism. The foundation's Golf Challenge has raised significant funds to support its mission. Els also founded The Ernie Els Foundation in South Africa, providing educational assistance and golf opportunities to young individuals from families with limited resources. His business ventures include golf course design, hospitality, and an award-winning wine portfolio through Ernie Els Wines in South Africa.
