Penelope Boston is a cave scientist and astrobiologist whose work explores life in extreme environments on Earth as a window into the potential for life beyond our planet. Trained as a geologist and microbiologist, Boston has spent decades studying caves—particularly sulfuric acid caves and lava tubes—as natural laboratories for understanding how microorganisms survive in darkness, isolation, and chemically unusual conditions.
