Paul Milgrom Biography
Paul Milgrom is recognized for his contributions to economics, particularly in auction theory and market design. Milgrom is a Nobel Laureate in Economic Sciences and serves as the Shirley and Leonard Ely Professor of Humanities and Sciences in the Department of Economics at Stanford University. He is also a Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research and directs the Market Design program at the institute. Milgrom is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His work spans auctions, market design, contracts and incentives, industrial economics, organizational economics, finance, and game theory.
Before his academic career in economics, Milgrom worked as an actuary in San Francisco and Columbus, Ohio, and became a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries. He began his graduate studies in the MBA program at Stanford University before transitioning to a PhD under the supervision of Robert Wilson, who later shared the Nobel Prize with him. Milgrom held a teaching position at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, where he contributed to the development of game theory and information economics. He later taught at Yale University before returning to Stanford University.
Milgrom, along with Robert Wilson, received the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for advancing the theory of auctions and inventing new auction formats for goods and services that could not be efficiently sold through traditional auctions. Their work has enabled governments to allocate complex public assets, such as radio and broadband frequencies, electricity, airport landing slots, and natural resources, to maximize efficiency and societal benefit. Milgrom is co-inventor of the simultaneous multiple round auction and the combinatorial clock auction, and led the design team for the Federal Communications Commission's incentive auction, which reallocated spectrum from television broadcast to mobile broadband.
Milgrom has advised Microsoft Networks on sponsored search auctions, Google on its IPO auction, Yahoo on advertising marketplace design, and spectrum regulators in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, and Mexico on radio spectrum sales. His work has influenced the global mobile industry and generated significant spectrum license revenues. As founder of Auctionomics, Milgrom applies market design principles to issues such as water scarcity and artificial intelligence. His book, "Putting Auction Theory to Work," is a reference in auction theory, and he is co-author of the textbook "Economics, Organization and Management."
Milgrom has been named a Distinguished Fellow by the American Economic Association and has received the Nemmers Prize in Economics, the BBVA Frontiers of Knowledge Award, the CME-MSRI Prize for Innovative Quantitative Applications, the Carty Award for the Advancement of Science, and a Technology and Engineering Emmy Award. His books and articles have been widely cited, reflecting the impact of his research on academic economics and policy.
