Patty Jenkins Biography
Patty Jenkins is an American film director, screenwriter, and producer recognized for her contributions to the film and television industry. Jenkins earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The Cooper Union in New York City and a Master of Fine Arts from the AFI Conservatory in Los Angeles. She developed her filmmaking skills through short films and gained experience as an assistant camera person and focus puller on commercials and music videos before moving into feature filmmaking.
Jenkins directed her debut feature, "Monster," a biographical crime drama starring Charlize Theron as Aileen Wuornos. The film received critical and commercial success, earning Jenkins the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature and the AFI Franklin J. Schaffner Alumni Medal. Theron received multiple awards for her performance, including the Academy Award, Golden Globe, and SAG Award for Best Actress. Jenkins was also nominated for a Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival for the film.
After "Monster," Jenkins directed episodes of "Arrested Development" and "Entourage," and helmed the pilot and series finale of AMC's drama "The Killing." Her work on "The Killing" earned her a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series and the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series. Jenkins later directed and executive produced TNT's limited drama series "I Am the Night."
Jenkins directed "Wonder Woman," becoming the first woman to direct a major American studio superhero film and the first woman to helm a live-action film with a budget over $100 million. The film received positive reviews, became one of Rotten Tomatoes' highest-rated superhero films, and grossed over $822 million worldwide. Jenkins co-wrote, directed, and produced the sequel, "Wonder Woman 1984." Her negotiations for the "Wonder Woman" films contributed to the ongoing discussion about pay equity in Hollywood, as Jenkins advocated for equal compensation for women in the film industry.
Jenkins was named a runner-up for Time Magazine's Person of the Year following the release of "Wonder Woman," highlighting her cultural impact. Her work is known for its focus on strong female protagonists and emotionally complex storytelling, establishing Jenkins as a prominent figure in contemporary cinema, film direction, and screenwriting.
