Passion Pit Biography
Passion Pit is an American electropop band founded by singer-songwriter and producer Michael Angelakos. The project originated as a solo effort while Angelakos was attending Emerson College in Boston, with early tracks crafted as a Valentine’s Day gift for his then-girlfriend. That collection evolved into the band’s debut EP, Chunk of Change, released in 2008. Passion Pit quickly gained critical acclaim and a devoted fanbase for its euphoric melodies, shimmering synths, and Angelakos’s distinctive falsetto vocals. Their breakout hit, “Sleepyhead,” became a defining anthem of the late-2000s indie-electronic scene.
In 2009, the band released their debut full-length album, Manners, which included hits like “The Reeling” -- an MTV Video Music Award nominee for Breakthrough Video -- and further established Passion Pit’s reputation for blending emotional depth with danceable pop energy. Their sophomore album, Gossamer (2012), was a commercial and critical success, debuting in the top 5 of the Billboard 200 and featuring standout tracks like the double platinum single “Take a Walk” and “Carried Away.” The album explored themes of mental health, personal struggle, and resilience, mirroring Angelakos’s own challenges with bipolar disorder—something he has spoken about openly and advocated for within the music industry. Both albums were RIAA gold-certified.
Passion Pit followed up with Kindred in 2015 and Tremendous Sea of Love in 2017, continuing their signature blend of heartfelt lyricism and expansive electronic production. Over the years, Angelakos has also used his platform to champion mental health reform in the creative industries, launching The Wishart Group in 2017 to support artists with legal, educational, and healthcare services. Today, Passion Pit remains a beloved name in indie pop, known for fusing vulnerability with vibrant, genre-blurring soundscapes.
