Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, known professionally as Halsey, is an American singer-songwriter recognized for her confessional approach to contemporary pop music. Halsey initially gained attention by sharing self-recorded tracks on platforms such as SoundCloud and Tumblr, which led to a recording contract. She released her debut EP, "Room 93," followed by her first studio album, "Badlands," an electropop and synthpop record that debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and achieved double Platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America. The album's singles—"Ghost," "New Americana," "Colors," and "Castle"—each received Platinum certification in the United States.
Halsey's prominence increased with her collaboration on The Chainsmokers' "Closer," which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for 12 consecutive weeks and earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Her second studio album, "Hopeless Fountain Kingdom," debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and was certified Platinum in the United States and Canada. The single "Without Me" from her catalog became her first solo number one on the Billboard Hot 100, maintaining a top-five position for 22 weeks. Her third studio album, "Manic," debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and became an RIAA-certified Platinum album. For her fourth album, "If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power," Halsey collaborated with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, incorporating industrial and rock influences.
In addition to her music career, Halsey launched the cosmetics brand About-Face and published the poetry collection "I Would Leave Me If I Could," which appeared on The New York Times Best Sellers list. She made a cameo in the film "A Star Is Born" and served as an advisor on NBC's "The Voice." Halsey has received recognition from TIME's 100 Most Influential People, the Songwriters Hall of Fame's Hal David Starlight Award, Billboard Music Awards, MTV Video Music Award, GLAAD Media Award, and BMI Film & TV Awards.
Halsey is known for openly discussing personal experiences with bipolar disorder, endometriosis, and ADHD, and is an advocate for mental health awareness, LGBTQ+ rights, and suicide prevention. Her fifth studio album, "The Great Impersonator," is a concept record exploring musical styles from the 1970s through the 2000s, inspired by her experiences with lupus and a rare T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200. Halsey also embarked on the "For My Last Trick Tour" and has developed a television show with Amazon MGM Studios. With over 50 billion streams and a diverse catalog, Halsey continues to influence the pop and alternative music landscape.
