Nina Williams Biography
Nina Williams is an American professional rock climber based in Boulder, Colorado, recognized for her achievements in highball bouldering, a discipline involving boulder problems 20 feet or higher without rope protection. Williams is among a select group of women to climb a V13, one of the most challenging grades in bouldering, and has completed multiple ascents on highball boulders reaching 45, 50, and 55 feet. She was the first woman to complete several difficult routes worldwide, including locations such as Bishop, California, and Rocklands, South Africa.
Williams gained attention with her ascent of "Ray of Light" in Rocklands, marking the first female ascent of this V13 problem. Her achievements include the first female ascent of "Ambrosia" in the Buttermilks of Bishop, California, which Climbing magazine described as one of the hardest free solos completed by a woman. Williams also completed "Evilution Direct" (V11) and "Footprints" (V9) on the same boulder, becoming the first woman to finish the "Grandpa Peabody Trifecta." She has continued to make first female ascents on boulders, sport routes, and big wall traditional climbs, including "Spray of Light" V13, "China Beach" 5.14b, and "Father Time," a 2,000-foot 5.13b in Yosemite.
Williams has been featured in the short film "The High Road," which was selected for the Banff Mountain Film Festival and shown during the REEL ROCK 14 film tour. The film highlights her approach to highball bouldering, including her preparation on rope and her ascent of "Too Big to Flail" (V10), a 50-foot highball in the Buttermilks. She has also appeared in films such as "Reel Rock 10," "Pretty Strong," "ZA," "High And Mighty," and "Dear Mother - A Climber's Transracial Adoption Story." Williams is known for articulating the mental and physical demands of climbing, contributing to her presence in climbing media.
In a personal essay for Rock & Ice magazine, Williams discussed her experience as a teenager when she was banned from competition after falsifying results in a USA Climbing regional qualifier. She reflected on the pressures that led to her actions and how she rebuilt her approach to competition, focusing on intrinsic motivation and resilience. This perspective on fear, failure, and growth has become central to her identity within the climbing community.
Williams is a Certified Professional Coach in leadership and development and has served as Board President of the American Alpine Club. She collaborates with organizations such as Color the Crag, Flash Foxy, and the London Women's Climbing Symposium, and has led clinics at climbing gyms across the country. Williams holds a bachelor's degree in communication and leadership management from the University of Colorado. Her career integrates elite climbing, coaching, and advocacy, with a focus on mindset, risk management, diversity, and leadership in the outdoor industry.
