Nate Parker Biography
Nate Parker is an American actor, writer, director, and producer whose work focuses on African-American history, social justice, and racial equality. Parker established his presence in Hollywood by portraying intense and determined characters in historical dramas, gaining recognition with his role as one of the first African-American college debaters in "The Great Debaters," directed by and co-starring Denzel Washington. He continued to build his filmography with performances in "Red Tails," "Red Hook Summer," and "Arbitrage." Additional acting credits include "Beyond the Lights," "The Secret Life of Bees," "Non-Stop," "Felon," and "Pride."
Parker wrote, directed, produced, and starred in "The Birth of a Nation," a historical drama centered on Nat Turner, the enslaved man who led a slave rebellion in Southampton County, Virginia. The film received both the Grand Jury and Audience Award at Sundance and secured a record-breaking distribution deal with Fox Searchlight. Parker was honored with the Sundance Institute's Vanguard Award, the CinemaCon Breakthrough Director of the Year Award, and the Disruption Innovation Award at Tribeca Film Festival.
Parker continued his filmmaking career with "American Skin," a drama addressing police violence against Black Americans. The film, which premiered at the Venice International Film Festival, follows a Marine veteran confronting the aftermath of his son's fatal shooting by police. Parker later wrote, directed, and produced "Newborn," a drama featuring David Oyelowo, Olivia Washington, Barry Pepper, and Jimmie Fails, released through Mansa Studios in collaboration with AMC Theatres.
In addition to his work in film, Parker is active in community engagement and education. He founded the Nate Parker Foundation to use film as a tool for social change, mentors students in central Los Angeles, collaborates with the Boys and Girls Clubs, and leads a nonprofit focused on addressing systemic disparities in African-American communities. Wiley College, a historically Black college in Marshall, Texas, established the Nate Parker School of Film and Drama to support the development of independent filmmakers. Parker's career reflects a sustained commitment to exploring African-American history and advancing social justice through the film industry.
