Gina Prince-Bythewood Biography
Gina Prince-Bythewood is a film director, screenwriter, and producer known for her work in character-driven storytelling, particularly highlighting women and underrepresented voices in film and television. Prince-Bythewood studied at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, where she received the Gene Reynolds Scholarship for Directing and the Ray Stark Memorial Scholarship for Outstanding Undergraduate. After graduation, she began her career as a writer on the television series "A Different World" and continued to write and produce for network television on series including "Felicity," "South Central," and "Sweet Justice" before transitioning to directing. Her television directorial debut was the CBS Schoolbreak Special "What About Your Friends," which earned her an NAACP Image Award for Best Children's Special and two Emmy nominations for writing and directing.
After a decade primarily focused on writing and producing for network television, Prince-Bythewood moved into feature filmmaking with the semi-autobiographical film "Love & Basketball," featuring Sanaa Lathan, Omar Epps, Alfre Woodard, and Dennis Haysbert, and executive produced by Spike Lee. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and earned Prince-Bythewood an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay and a Humanitas Prize. She followed with an adaptation of the best-selling novel "The Secret Life of Bees," featuring Dakota Fanning, Queen Latifah, Paul Bettany, Jennifer Hudson, Sophie Okonedo, and Alicia Keys. She later wrote and directed "Beyond the Lights."
Prince-Bythewood directed "The Old Guard," an action film about soldiers with unique powers starring KiKi Layne and Charlize Theron, marking the first comic book movie adaptation directed by a Black woman. The film became one of Netflix's top 10 most popular films. She continued her work in action and historical drama with "The Woman King," a film set in the 19th century about the women warriors from the Dahomey tribe, starring Viola Davis as a general training the next generation of female warriors.
"The Woman King" earned Prince-Bythewood industry recognition, including the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Directing in a Motion Picture, the African-American Film Critics Association Award for Best Director, the Alliance of Women Film Journalists Award for Best Woman Director, and the Black Reel Award for Outstanding Director. She also received nominations for Best Director at the Critics' Choice Movie Awards and the British Academy Film Awards. The American Cinema Editors presented her with the ACE Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award, an honor recognizing distinguished achievement in film.
In addition to her feature film work, Prince-Bythewood served as showrunner of "Shots Fired," the Fox limited series examining the aftermath of a police-involved shooting. She also directed the pilot and served as executive producer of ABC's limited series "Women of the Movement," earning an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series. Prince-Bythewood received the MPA Creator Award for her body of work, which includes "Love & Basketball," "Beyond the Lights," "The Secret Life of Bees," and "The Woman King." She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and is recognized for her contributions to filmmaking, representation, and storytelling in the entertainment industry.
