Monica Seles Biography
Monica Seles is recognized as a leading figure in professional tennis, known for her powerful playing style and significant impact on women's tennis. Seles became the youngest champion in French Open history at age 16, marking the beginning of a period of dominance that influenced the sport's evolution. Her two-handed forehand, strong backhand, and aggressive return of serve established her as a pioneer of power tennis in the women's game, influencing future champions such as Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova.
Seles won eight Grand Slam titles as a teenager, reshaping the competitive landscape of women's tennis. She secured victories in her first six Grand Slam finals and earned nine major singles championships overall: four at the Australian Open, three at Roland Garros, and two at the US Open. At 17, Seles became the youngest player to be ranked number one in the world by the Women's Tennis Association. Between 1991 and 1993, she won 22 titles and reached 33 finals out of 34 tournaments played. Seles became the first player since Hilde Krahwinkel Sperling to win the French Open three consecutive times.
During her career, Seles faced significant adversity. She was the victim of an on-court attack, which resulted in physical and psychological challenges, including post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. Despite these obstacles, Seles returned to professional tennis, winning another Grand Slam title at the Australian Open and reaching finals in New York and Paris. She contributed to the U.S. Fed Cup team's victory and earned a bronze medal in singles at the Sydney Olympics. Seles was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
Following her tennis career, Seles authored several books and became an advocate for mental health and wellness. Her memoir, "Getting a Grip: On My Body, My Mind, My Self," provides a candid account of her experiences and recovery.
