Michael S. Roth Biography
Michael S. Roth is a historian, scholar, curator, and public intellectual who serves as the 16th president of Wesleyan University. A first-generation college student, Roth returned to his alma mater after a career spanning the classroom and leadership roles at major cultural and academic institutions. He earned his undergraduate degree from Wesleyan and completed his doctorate in history at Princeton University. Roth’s academic work focuses on how individuals and societies interpret the past, with particular attention to memory, trauma, and psychoanalysis.
Before joining Wesleyan, Roth began his teaching career at Scripps College, where he became the Hartley Burr Alexander Professor of the Humanities and founded the Scripps College Humanities Institute, a center for interdisciplinary scholarship. He later served as associate director of the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles, curating the exhibition "Sigmund Freud: Conflict and Culture," which opened at the Library of Congress and traveled nationally and internationally. Roth also served as president of California College of the Arts, where he contributed to the institution’s development in arts education.
As president of Wesleyan University, Roth has overseen significant changes to the academic landscape, including the launch of seven interdisciplinary colleges in areas such as environmental studies, film, East Asian studies, and design and engineering. He led the creation of centers including the Allbritton Center for the Study of Public Life and the Shapiro Creative Writing Center. Under his leadership, Wesleyan completed a major fundraising campaign, raising more than $482 million, primarily for financial aid. Roth has advocated for access and affordability by eliminating loans for the neediest students, replacing them with grants, and removing standardized test requirements to broaden the applicant pool.
Roth is the author of several books on liberal education and higher education policy, including "Beyond the University: Why Liberal Education Matters," "Safe Enough Spaces: A Pragmatist's Approach to Inclusion, Free Speech, and Political Correctness on College Campuses," "Memory, Trauma and History: Essays on Living with the Past," and "The Student: A Short History." He regularly publishes essays and commentaries in national outlets including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and Politico, and has appeared on cable news to discuss issues in higher education.
Roth is recognized for his advocacy of academic freedom and opposition to governmental efforts to undermine the independence of colleges and universities. He received the PEN/Benenson Courage Award at the PEN America Literary Gala for his commitment to academic freedom and his public advocacy for education, democracy, and free expression.
