Melanie Nezer Biography
Melanie Nezer is a leading advocate for refugee and immigrant rights with more than 25 years of experience in global refugee and humanitarian policy, legal practice, and nonprofit leadership. Nezer serves as vice president for advocacy and external relations at the Women's Refugee Commission, a nongovernmental organization focused on improving the lives and protecting the rights of women, children, and youth displaced by conflict and crisis. In this role, Nezer and her team share the commission's research and recommendations with policymakers, media, supporters, and the public in the United States and internationally. Her work has included field research and co-authoring a report with Physicians for Human Rights on the treatment of pregnant, postpartum, and nursing women in U.S. immigration detention. Nezer has provided expert commentary in major outlets such as Politico, The Bulwark, and Ms. Magazine, and has appeared on Vox Media's podcast "Today, Explained" to discuss comprehensive immigration reform.
Before joining the Women's Refugee Commission, Nezer spent nearly two decades at HIAS, the American Jewish community's international refugee agency. She rose to senior vice president for public affairs, shaping the agency's policy and advocacy agenda and overseeing departments including policy and advocacy, communications, community engagement, and development. Nezer also served as vice president for policy and advocacy, migration policy counsel, and director of the employment visa program, representing at-risk Jewish professionals and religious workers seeking safety in the United States. Prior to HIAS, Nezer was immigration policy director for the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants, where she co-edited Refugee Reports and contributed to the annual World Refugee Survey. She began her legal career in private practice in Miami, specializing in immigration law and criminal defense.
Nezer has been quoted in major media outlets and has delivered multiple TEDx talks. Her talk "The Fundamental Right to Seek Asylum" has been viewed by millions, providing a historically grounded perspective on the U.S. southern border and the importance of asylum protections. She has appeared before the Atlantic Council and on C-SPAN, and has visited refugee communities worldwide to advocate on their behalf. Nezer holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and a Juris Doctor from Boston College Law School.
